Storytelling Toolkit – Grade R-11

Activity Introduction

This storytelling-based activity explores ways to bring books to life in your classroom through the example of the Cape Leopard Trust’s Footprints in the Fynbos storybook. The resource was co-created with Western Cape teachers and includes creative, curriculum-linked classroom ideas that help learners connect emotionally to biodiversity, conservation, and their own lived experiences.

Grade: R-11 (ECD-FET)

Resources Required: Chosen print or audio storybook (e.g. Footprints in the Fynbos), basic art supplies, research materials (e.g. posters, books, internet), and items for tactile/multisensory learning (e.g. playdough, fabric, Plaster of Paris).

Key Concepts & Skills: Key Concepts: Biodiversity, Conservation, Leopards, Leopard Conservation, Emotional Well-being, Environmental Awareness. Skills Developed/Learning Outcomes: Comprehension and listening skills, Vocabulary building and language development, Emotional regulation and social empathy, Friendship and collaboration, Patience and critical thinking, Environmental knowledge and connection to nature, Confidence in presenting and performing.

Extra Notes: This resource is designed for use in the Foundation Phase through to FET Phase (Grades R–11) and supports curriculum links across Life Skills, Language, Natural Sciences, Geography, Mathematics, and the Arts. It includes ideas for inclusive learning, emotional literacy, and connecting the classroom to community through eco-clubs and events. The ideas all incorporate multimodal learning (using children's senses to learn).
