Ingcungcu Sunbird Restoration

This is achieved through the planting of fynbos stepping-stone gardens which provide ‘filling stations’ for sunbirds and outdoor learning spaces for people. Ingcungcu’s long-term vision is to create a nectar-rich Sunbird Stepping-Stone Corridor across the urbanized Cape Flats, linking Muizenberg Mountain with the Boland Mountains above Stellenbosch.

Ingcungcu has recently established the Eco-Club Program which provides facilitated after-school workshops for learners who are part of a school eco-club or an environmental club. Through facilitating workshops in three existing stepping-stone school gardens and by planting a garden in one of our new schools, the program aims to reconnect fragments of critically endangered habitat, and inspire a new generation of biodiversity leaders. Within the program, learners form lasting connections to the fauna and flora found within their school gardens, as workshops provide them with opportunities to observe and document nature using hands-on creative processes. The program also aims to broaden the skill sets of learners through more technical activities such as research, photography and landscape
architecture.

Field trips are an integral part of the Eco-Club Program , providing the opportunity for learners to experience often inaccessible local environments of rich biodiversity. Through immersive learning activities in both their immediate and extended natural environments, learners grow their connection to nature, and come to realise the critical role they play in conserving nature and supporting their communities. We currently offer these services to our four participating schools but with growing capacity hope to extend the program into additional high schools and primary schools who form part of the Sunbird Stepping-stone Corridor.
