Beautiful Bacteria Experiment – Grade 4-7

Activity Introduction

Learners will do an experiment to test the growth of bacteria in various environments, recording their results and answering related questions on the Worksheets provided.

Grade: 4-7

Resources Required: Pre-poured agar plates (to prepare your own agar you will need: 1 – 4 beef stock cubes, 1 – 1.5 packets unflavoured gelatine, 2 tsps sugar, 1 cup of water), petri dishes / foil muffin cups), cotton buds, a cardboard box just big enough to hold the agar plates, tape, some old newspaper (to wrap around the petri dishes when you dispose of them)

Duration: 1 hour

Level of teacher facilitation: Moderate - High
