Clear Catchments – Grade 4-6

Activity Introduction

Use this interactive lesson to explore the concept of catchments and human impact on river health, water quality and flow. The lesson includes a practical experiment (best done outside) and discussion points for engaging learners.

Grade: 4-6

Resources Required: Printed Learner Worksheets, Experiment materials (Plastic containers, a small bowl, different types of soil, wood chips, leaves, rocks, water, blocks of varying sizes)

Key Concepts & Skills: Key Concepts: Water use, sources of water, river health, human impact on rivers – pollution. 21st Century Skills: Curiosity, Critical thinking, Imagination, Interpretation, Reasoning, Communication

Duration: 1 hour (factor in time to setup the experiment)
