Lungs versus Gills Experiments – Grade 9-11

Activity Introduction

Try out these two practical experiments making a model lung and a model gill to explore the breathing process in lungs compared to gills with your learners. Learners then answer questions on the experiments using the Learner Worksheets downloadable below.

Grade: 9-11

Resources Required: Activity Plan, printed Learner Worksheets. For the Lung Model experiment: A clear plastic bottle, two balloons, one straw, sticky tape, scissors. For the Gill Model experiment: Coffee filter or filter paper, jar or beaker, elastic band, ‘dirty’ water.
