Activity Introduction

“Run Until You Can Fly” aims to raise awareness about wetlands, introduce some animal inhabitants, and explore threats and conservation solutions to protect these vital ecosystems. Join Saro the White-winged Flufftail, Oryx the Cape Clawless Otter, and Gus the Wattled Crane as they explore a wetland in South Africa while helping the young flufftail learn how to fly.

Grade: R-3

Prior Knowledge: Prior knowledge is not required, but a basic understanding of an ecosystem would be beneficial.

Resources Required: The children's book can be used as set literature to develop reading skills or read to promote environmental awareness. The audiobook video can assist with these activities and requires a display monitor.

Key Concepts & Skills: Concepts: The story teaches wetland ecology (peat, sedges, wildlife), threats to wetlands (drainage, pollution), and conservation actions children can take as "wetland ambassadors". Skills: Children build reading and literacy skills (vocabulary, comprehension, phonics through sound words), environmental awareness and stewardship, and social-emotional growth through themes of perseverance, friendship, and problem-solving.
