The Delights of Decomposition – Experiment – Grade 8-10

Activity Introduction

The learners will conduct an experiment to understand how the decomposition process works and to explore the ideal conditions for decomposition to occur.

Grade: 8-10

Resources Required: Learner Worksheets (downloadable below), 12 glass jars, 10 cm of soil for each jar, water, vegetable scraps (carrots work well)

Duration: Initial setup: 1 hour, observation: daily over two weeks, write up: 1 hour

Level of teacher facilitation: Low - Moderate
