Water Flow Investigation – Grade 7-9

Activity Introduction

Use this interactive lesson to explore the concept of catchments and the environmental and human impacts on catchment water flow. The lesson includes a practical experiment (best done outside), and discussion points for engaging learners.

Grade: 7-9

Resources Required: Printed Learner Worksheets, Experiment materials (Plastic containers, a small bowl, different types of soil, wood chips, leaves, rocks, water, blocks of varying sizes)

Key Concepts & Skills: Key Concepts: Water use, river and catchment health, human impact on “river” water quality and flow. 21st Century Skills: Curiosity, Critical thinking, Imagination, Interpretation, Reasoning, Communication

Duration: 1 hour (factor in time to setup the experiment)

Level of teacher facilitation: Moderate-High

Curriculum links: Natural Science & Technology (Grade 7: Matter & Materials - Separating mixtures), Geography (Grade 7: Natural resources - Natural resources on Earth, Use and Abuse, Water in South Africa - River health and catchment care)
