Wetland Ecology, Management, and Conservation

Activity Introduction

High-elevation wetlands form part of the water towers in the upper reaches of our catchments that provide, support, and regulate water resources to many downstream users. Use these illustrated guidelines from our partners at BirdLife South Africa to teach students key concepts in wetland ecology, management, and conservation using real-world case studies from landscapes in southern Africa.

Grade: 10-12

Prior Knowledge: A basic understanding of the water cycle, climate, and geography of southern Africa.

Resources Required: Resources comprise the comprehensive wetland management guidelines and an accompanying summary translated into the major languages of southern Africa. Field trips to wetlands would be highly beneficial for consolidating concepts from the provided resources.

Key Concepts & Skills: Wetland ecology (ecosystem services, formation, threats), practical management techniques (grazing, fire, infrastructure, cultivation, rehabilitation), and conservation strategies (monitoring, revenue generation, community engagement).

Duration: Five lessons/periods

Level of teacher facilitation: Moderate-High

Curriculum links: Geography, Life Sciences, Agricultural Management Practices, Agricultural Sciences. The resources integrate concepts across all four subjects within a South African context.
