Sustainable Schools x Lapalala Rally – A Weekend of Learning and Connection at Lapalala Wilderness School
The Lapalala Wilderness School recently hosted a Sustainable Schools x Lapalala Rally, a workshop designed to support teachers involved in the Sustainable Schools Programme, especially those who are new to the initiative. Led nationally by Nature Connect, the Sustainable Schools Programme empowers schools to become active hubs of sustainability. Through environmental learning, practical action projects, and community involvement, schools are encouraged to weave sustainability into their daily teaching and management practices. This workshop aimed to help teachers better understand the programme, navigate the platform, and align sustainability efforts with the school curriculum.
Teachers took part in engaging and practical sessions that included an introduction to the Sustainable Schools Programme and its purpose, step-by-step support on navigating the online hub, uploading photos and reporting project progress for assessment, accessing and applying curriculum-linked teaching resources, working with the school’s chosen Focus Area, guidance on developing a School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP), support in drafting or reviewing an Environmental Policy, practical solutions to common challenges, and choosing environmental calendar days to celebrate and increase awareness.
The day concluded with a guided game drive through the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve, giving teachers the chance to reconnect with the natural world they are helping their learners care for. This closing experience reminded participants why their work is so vital: not only did the workshop equip educators with tools and knowledge, it also reignited a passion for environmental education and sustainable change.
