Young Scientists from N.D. Mokonyane Explore the Mogalakwena River
Environmental learning came to life for the Grade 7 learners from N.D. Mokonyane Primary School, who recently took part in a hands-on river health investigation at the Mogalakwena River.
Armed with curiosity and enthusiasm, the learners became young scientists for the day! Using the mini SASS (South African Scoring System) method, they explored the biodiversity of the river by collecting and identifying macroinvertebrates—tiny aquatic insects that serve as bioindicators of water quality. Each species they found helped them piece together a bigger picture of the river’s overall health.
But the exploration didn’t end there. The students also conducted water chemistry tests, measuring pH levels and other important indicators that reveal the condition of aquatic ecosystems. These activities not only made science fun and engaging but also deepened their understanding of the crucial link between clean water and a healthy environment.
Through this exciting, hands-on experience, the learners discovered that every small creature plays a big role in maintaining the balance of nature. The day highlighted how science and curiosity can inspire young people to become future guardians of our rivers and natural resources.
