Limpopo Highlight: Monala Primary Cultivates Sustainability Through Food Gardening
Several teachers recently attended a Food Gardening Workshop hosted by Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and Rhino UK at Laluka Farm in Vaalwater. The training equipped them with new knowledge and practical skills to further strengthen the school’s gardening and sustainability projects. Building on this momentum, the Adult Action Team presented the programme during a Teacher/Parent meeting, where parents and guardians were shown how the initiative aligns with CAPS, supports the school curriculum, and extends benefits into the wider community.
The school garden itself continues to thrive. To protect the trees during the winter cold fronts, they were carefully covered, ensuring their health and productivity. Learners played an active role by transplanting seedlings, tending the garden, harvesting spinach, and collecting lemons from the fruit trees to make lemon jam. Rainwater harvesting also plays a vital role in supporting the garden, with a JoJo tank capturing and pumping water directly for irrigation, reinforcing water-wise practices and sustainable resource use. On World Environment Day (5 June), Eco-Club learners created posters and presented them during assembly, raising awareness among their peers about the importance of environmental protection and sustainable living.
