Bokbaai Adventure with Mamre Primary

The Mamre Primary Leadership Camp held at Bokbaai from 3-5 February 2023 was an unforgettable experience for all involved. This camp was unique in three ways that made it stand out from the rest. Firstly, it was the first 2023 group to stay at our seaside camp, Bokbaai. Secondly, it was the first Mamre Primary camp held at Nature Connect, and lastly, there was a thrilling wildlife sighting that took place.

On the second day of the camp, we embarked on an exploration of the Reserve. The learners were excited to explore the natural beauty of the area, and along the way, we spotted two Ostriches – a male and female – about 500m away. The sighting was incredible, and everyone was amazed by the size and grace of these magnificent creatures.

But the highlight of the trip came when the learners were watching the pounding of the ocean waves, only to find that a Cape Cormorant was watching them instead. Unfortunately, the bird had broken its left foot, and it could hardly move. We were all saddened by the bird’s injury, and the learners showed remarkable compassion and empathy towards the animal. This experience taught us that the wellbeing of all living things on Earth affects our hearts, and as humans, we have a natural instinct to care for others. Encouraging this instinct in our children is vital, and we were proud to see our learners respond with such kindness and care.

We contacted the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) authorities with regards to the injured bird, and they came to the site to assist. It was a great relief to see the bird taken into care and receiving the necessary medical attention.
